Tracey Tawhiao

Tracey Tawhiao

Born 1967

Tracey Tawhiao (Ngai te Rangi, Whakatohea, Tuwharetoa) was born in 1967. She is a multi-skilled contemporary artist who has studied and worked in a variety of fields. She is a writer, performance poet, filmmaker, qualified lawyer and practising artist. Her artworks convey the breadth of her experience and her position as a Maori woman in a European-dominated society. She is a regular contributor to Te Ao Maori Collective and her work has been incorporated into several Contemporary Maori art group shows. The book 'Taiawhio: Conversations with Contemporary Artists' includes a chapter on this artist and one of her artworks features on the cover of this publication.

Her practice employs the unconventional art material of newspaper. Her use of this media evolved from her interest in the written word and text and is an extension of her live performances in which she highlights the oral aspect of Maori history. The newspaper series has its origins in Tawhiao's youth, when as a way of brightening up her grandparent's home on Matakana Island in the Hauraki Gulf, she suggested redecorating their newspaper-covered walls with colourful murals. While completing this project she noticed the negative connotations in the headlines and decided to embark on her series of artworks that subvert the 'truth' of the daily news.

Tawhiao employs pages of newspapers such as the New Zealand Herald and the New York Times and obscuring certain passages of their text using alternating blocks of boldly coloured oil pastel and single graphic symbols. The symbols she uses are sourced from Maori rock art and Creation myths. She has also created her own visual language comprising of fish motifs and other symbols that relate to her Matakana Island heritage. Her blanking out of news stories acts to 'rewrite' them from an alternative, Maori perspective. By obscuring certain words in a headline or passages of an article she changes the focus of each news item and subverts the editorial slant.

DROP THE CHARGES... just STOP.

"On the eve of the appeal to the Supreme Court on the admissibility of police evidence in the 'Urewera 18' case, Wikileaks have released a cable which says the New Zealand Police told the US Embassy in Wellington that they expected those accused would only get a fine rather than jail time should they be convicted," said Global Peace and Justice Auckland spokesperson Mike Treen.

It's been a stitch up from the start - and now the state prosecution has created further delays again in the case.  It appears that after 4 years the start of the hearing, due to begin this month, will be delayed a further year...

The implications of the delays may lead to the prosecution claiming that they do not have a case and will therefore drop the charges.  If this is the case the facts and information leading to the raids may never be revealed.

The prosecution has created other delays including charging the remaining defendents with being members of a criminal gang - a charge that has been considered too difficult for a Jury to hear.  The only other charges are related to firearms.

The 15 people charged after police raids in the Urewera Ranges and elsewhere in October 2007 have been granted leave to appeal High Court and Appeal Court decisions that a judge alone hear their trial.

The Supreme Court released its ruling today allowing the group to argue for a trial by jury, which will be heard in the Supreme Court.

The court suppressed any reporting of the arguments made in the two-day hearing held in Wellington, which finished on Wednesday.

The first trial of the 15 people accused of various charges, including having arms and taking part in an organised criminal group, was due to be held before a judge alone at the High Court in Auckland on May 30.

The trial was expected to last up to three months.

NICKY HAGER
December 2, 2007

What information led the police to smash the Urewera 'terrorist' training camps? Nicky Hager investigates the intelligence trail which led from cafe conversations to the armed police response.

Two years ago a man quite similar to central characters in the Urewera "terrorism" case purchased a pistol holster on TradeMe for $66. Officers at the Otahuhu police intelligence centre which later led the Urewera investigation noticed the TradeMe sale and prepared an affidavit saying they "believed"' the suspect had bought the holster because he had a pistol and "intends to use the pistol to overthrow the New Zealand government".

A court granted a search warrant on the basis of these allegations and armed police raided the man's home. No pistol was found, no charges resulted and the New Zealand government was in no risk of being overthrown. The man has a reputation for extreme-sounding public statements but the moral of the story is that a "worst case scenario" affidavit can be exaggerated and unrealistic.

Some of the people at the centre of the Urewera "terrorist" case are also well known for extravagant rhetoric. It was their inflammatory talk of "war" and other disturbing statements, as leaked to the media from the police affidavit, that formed the basis of the terrorism charges.

A collection of tees that gives wearers a unique interactive experience using Augmented Reality

Like many ideas posted already there is nothing quite like watching the All Blacks perform their pre match haka - imagine if you could haka like the all Blacks. By Using Augmented Reality (AR) this tee shown can give our visitors an opportunity to haka like an All Black - the wearer becomes a part of the action!

Augmented Reality is a computer application that runs through a web cam. The Ar application can overlay digital content to the webcam video such as 3D models or video clips. This results in a webcam video that has digital content overlaid - in real time. The example above has commentary of an old All Blacks rugby game and also shows an overlaid movie clip of arms doing the actions to the haka - the wearer of the tee doesn't have to do any actions as the AR app will do it for you!

I can also see a woman's arms doing the poi to the popular waiata Poi E by Patea Maori Club. The video clips can also be of great NZ achievements or even old Country Calendar clips - anything that shows our unique ingenuity. The intro of these clips could also include a formal welcome by our Prime Minister John Key or even a 'virtual powhiri' - this will give our visitors a unique welcome and introduction to our Kiwi and Maori cultures through an interactive experience that they can tell all the people back home about.

The tee shirts can be handed out at the entrance of the matches throughout the Rugby World Cup and/or at the opening ceremony. The AR application can be downloaded as a standalone app, web based and also a smart phone (iPhone, Android etc) application. There can also be portable kiosks that run the application situated by where the tees are handed out. There could also be a possibility of the app running through the TV - imagine that!

By having multiple viewing methods of the AR app our visitors can view anytime anywhere and can last well after the Rugby World Cup giving this 'event' a lengthy shelf life.

A shout out to Saqoosha for developing the FLARToolkit.

who's afraid of Ai Weiwei?

For decades, Ai Weiwei has been taking on the Chinese state with the apparent protection afforded by his stature in the global art world. Yesterday, he was detained by authorities at the Beijing airport as he was leaving for Hong Kong, and he hasn’t been heard from in over a day.

According to his Twitter feed (English), police visited his studio last week to carry out ambiguous inspections; yesterday, they arrived with a search warrant, detained and questioned a number of his large staff of Chinese and foreign assistants, and shut off internet access in the neighborhood. A number of computers and hard drives were seized, and with them, likely a mountain of the video footage and other material that Ai has used to document both his epic artworks (most recently: 1 million hand-painted sunflower seeds in the Tate’s turbine hall) and his Kafka-esque experiences lobbying the government for justice (see his documentary about a few days in Chengdu, when he got punched by the cops and spent four hours filling out complaint forms at the police station).

Since calls for a Middle East-style ‘Jasmine Revolution’ emerged on a US-based website last month, Chinese authorities have been rounding up scores of dissidents and human rights lawyers. With roots in the firmament of Chinese society and abroad, Ai – arguably the most important living Chinese artist – is the highest profile target of the government’s detentions so far. At some point, nothing can protect you from the Communist Party, especially when you have 70,000 Twitter followers and dissent is in the air.

“We don’t know where he is,” an assistant of Ai’s told Reuters. “We hope that he can be released as soon as possible.”

Below, see an 18 minute teaser of Alison Klayman’s documentary, “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,” as featured last week on PBS’s Frontline:

Africa Addio

From the release text

Africa Addio / Farewell Africa (English Subtitles)

'Africa Addio' / 'Farewell Africa' (shot in 1964; released in 1966) is a documentary film about the decolonization of Africa, made by the Italian film directors Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco E. Prosperi. It shows like no other documentary what blacks are capable of if they get the chance. It is a masterpiece with beautiful music, composed by the Italian composer Riz Ortolani. Probably 'Africa Addio' is the best and most exposing documentary ever made about what happened in several African countries directly after decolonization, but because of political correctness the masses never heard of it. In the USA a censored version called 'Africa Blood and Guts' was released, which was deliberately stripped from the original music and the powerful message of 'Africa Addio' - so the sensors were able to portray the destruction, cruelty, savagery and genocide performed by the Africans as a 'struggle for indepence'. The directors Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco E. Prosperi dissociated themselves from this Hollywood (per)version of their film.
