Cogito Ergo Sum

Cogito_Ergo_Sum.mp4 Watch on Posterous
French philosopher René Descartes (1596-1650) proposed "the cogito" as demonstrating the most fundamental epistemological principle upon which all knowledge is based.

"I suppose, accordingly, that all the things which I see are false; fictitious. I believe that none of those objects which my fallacious memory represents ever existed; I suppose that I possess no senses; I believe that body, figure, extension, motion, and place are merely fictions of my mind. What is there, then, that can be esteemed true? Perhaps this only, that there is absolutely nothing certain. But how do I know that there is not something different altogether from the objects I have now enumerated, of which it is impossible to entertain the slightest doubt? Is there not a God, or some being, by whatever name I may designate Him, who causes these thoughts to arise in my mind? But why suppose such a Being, for it may be I myself am capable of producing them? Am I, then, at least not something? But I before denied that I possessed senses or a body; I hesitate, however, for what follows from that? Am I so dependent on the body and the senses that without these I cannot exist? But I had the persuasion that there was absolutely nothing in the world, that there was no sky and no earth, neither minds nor bodies; was I not, therefore, at the same time, persuaded that I did not exist? Far from it; I assuredly existed, since I was persuaded. But there is I know not what being, who is possessed at once of the highest power and the deepest cunning, who is constantly employing all his ingenuity in deceiving me. Doubtless, then, I exist, since I am deceived; and, let him deceive me as he may, he can never bring it about that I am nothing, so long as I shall be conscious that I am something. So that it must, in fine, be maintained, all things being maturely and carefully considered, that this proposition: I am, I exist; is necessarily true each time it is expressed by me, or conceived in my mind."

Blockbusters Exhibition. Dick Frizzell, Otis Frizzell And Mike Weston

Frizzell_blockbusters_exhibition_poster1

    • Friday, 30 March 2012
    • 18:00 until 21:30
  • Saatchi & Saatchi NZ Gallery , 3rd Floor The Strand Parnell

New work from Frizzell and Son (Dick and Otis F) and Weston Frizzell (Otis Frizzell and Mike Weston in collaboration.
In the vocabulary of graffiti art the term Blockbuster refers to a piece where one word occupies the entire wall. The outlined text is predominantly defined by the blacking out of the gaps and negative space. Parasitic of the underlying work, a BLOCKBUSTER envelopes and consumes the surface.

A Blockbuster is also the biggest thing of the summer, the thing everyone has to see.

WE KNOW LOVE YES WE DO

A projection of Love onto everyday objects in the form of hand drawn Maori patterns.  The Maori is well known for decorating their material cultural objects with patterns and symbols of life.  This imbues the objects with a personality and a meaning.  My patterns are symbols of a universal goodness that normally unseen is now put here to be seen.  My works are a series of paint pen drawings on household objects.  This signifies to me the amazing world we live in and the thoughts that follow from this feeling.

"I will present a Salon of this Art to celebrate Mothers, Family and Love.  There will be an opening evening and I will be at the Museum for three days following if anyone wishes to talk to me.  The work will be on display until May 1st."

"Guilty of ART" << the movement starts...

ARTIVIST : creative by any means necessary!

An indepedent action involving artists has been taking the to the streets by storm with project works = urban/ pop/ graff/ paste/ punked/ projected//

Prominent street artist Ha Ha aka Regan Tamanui has a wall in Sydney getting the "Guilty of ART!" treatment with the strong 7 layer stencil of Tame Iti as a prelude to a forthcoming painting trip through the North Island of Aotearoa//

Tame

Images have on the been created by various artists around the raids & subsequent trials of Tame Iti & the "Uremera Four"... along with Ha Ha there are images from Frizzell & Weston, DT, ARTIVIST & others...

Tutu

“Yeah Right” is a satirical adaptation of the popular Tui Beer advertising campaign that uses sarcasm in a humorous social commentary. In this artwork Mike Weston and Otis Frizzell present their version of Tui’s iconic ad, substituting an AK47 assault rifle for the usual perch branch. In Yeah Right, Tutu replaces both the Tui Beer branding, and also the social statement that is usually featured in the Tui beer billboard.
Dr Tutu is the name Tame Iti adopted when DJing on his various alternative radio slots. It features in the title of works Tututables, and Tututime 2004, and the logo featured on the painted canvas works exhibited. In Maori, (and most if not all Polynesian languages also) Tutu has a multiplicity of meanings such as ‘revolution’, ‘to meddle’, ‘arson’ and ‘sedition’. Tutu and the glyphic logo formed by the inverted numerals 22 (see below) have been recurring motifs in Weston Frizzell’s work since 2004. The message it conveys relates directly to the arrest of Tame Iti and other Tuhoe members under the terrorism suppression act. If it were spelled out it might read: “A terrorist revolution? Yeah, right.” Yeah Right is a fine art archival inkjet print on Hahnemule 100% cotton rag paper, edition of 180.// http://blog.prints.co.nz/2012/02/weston-frizzell-ask-who-are-real.html

IntErupt >> The Fake Taupō Farts Festerval 2012

well... a disappointment to say the least! Much like the TDC Arts Policy...

ARTIVIST : creative made clear criticism of the Erupt program with a simple question - "is there more?" which was quickly answered with a link to the complete program, an acknowledgement & personal reference & then a private message... the message below.  I think Kylie coveniently forgets she gets public funding & is open to public scrutiny.

Now my issue with these guys is they participate in a circle that will accept mediocrity & pat themselves on the back for a job... well... done... done so the boxes that need ticking have been ticked & their conservative non creative attempt at serving the public with public funds for public arts has been met - or not - what does it matter to them as long as they are not having to answer any tough questions or actually facilitate any art.  There must be some Council Art Policy for that surely?!?

ARTIVIST : creative has a couple of issues with the attitude from Council to public art & it starts with their own Public Art Policy 2006 (pdfs of the policy & guidelines posted).  The Policy clearly refers to a Arts Advisor who will administer & is available for consultation for both acquisition & proposal of public arts projects.  Now we'd assume this Advisor would be qualified to fulfill the requirements with capability for acquisition, valuation, assessment & appreciation of public art works including sculpture, installation, major works & pieces for public places & spaces in Taupō & that this role would be considered important with $100K of public funding for acquistion & several thousands dedicated to the Erupt attempt at a festival...

Well unfortunately not... there is no Arts Advisor & according to our sources Gareth Greene, the 2IC at Council won't even consider the policy when he makes any decisions - in his words "I've never even read it".  Aledgedly, when offered the policy paper he said "Council doesn't need to consider policy..." & refused to even look at the paper.

    • Hi Joff, not quite sure that it's particularly professional or polite to challenge 'Erupt' via facebook?!?!? We don't NEED to include a street art element in our Festival programme - as you know Graffiato was created as our urban art event... and we've got a few more things lined up that I'm not going to reveal until they happen. As we've discussed before I think it's great that you (and others) are creating your own artwork and street art activity in town - I would never post a negative comment about your projects on your facebook page - so politely request that you offer the same level of professional respect.
      Cheers
      Kylie

    • pfft... I'm not a "professional" for a start... I do art because I believe in it... I love it... I love the challenge.

I'm disappointed in the Erupt Festival... the program is soft in my opinion & I'll share that opinion where I like...

your Graffiato was a disappointment too... don't attempt it if you don't expect criticism - especially from me...

but most of all... keep following your "professional" line... I'll keep hating on it!

      Cheers

      Ciao

“….that we should treat all the trivial things in life seriously, and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality.”
Oscar Wilde.

To meet as many people as I can and to experience as much as possible.

To never have a regret that was "... if only..."

And to find kindness and share that with other people I meet along the way.

Religious views Believe in one's self is to believe in other's

Political Views Narcissistic Party (Planet Ero in the alpha mega quadrant)

Favourite quotations Please allow me to introduce myself. I am a peacock without a cause. A piece of transcendent trash. A futile blast of colour in a futile colourless world. Dancing in the lifeboat, about truth on the tight-rope, about laughing in the face of the firing squad. A man shot through by arrows, (all be it self inflicted), and yet still alive.

This is one of my favorite quotes from the artist Sebastian Horsley and his Autobiography "Dandy in the Underworld". Its dark conceptual nature belies its true optimism for the human condition.
Take that as what you will.
